The Huskies opened their season with a pre-season trip to Toole County, where they played Shelby on Thursdays. Weather created uncertainty, as many teams chose not to fight the elements, but the varsity team ended up playing Chinook two days later, with the ladies winning both contests.
The Shelby game was a tough one, but good for the girls. At the half, they trailed 21 – 25. They quickly caught up to the Coyotes in the second half, beginning to play with teamwork and determination. Their defense tightened up, making it hard for the opposing team to score. The Huskies managed to overcome the early point difference, making it to 52 points to end the game. The final score was Huskies 52, Coyotes 45. Dezirae Goodman was the leading scorer in the game, ending up with a total of 18 points.
Though the girls won the first game, they weren’t done yet, heading over once again on Saturday to face the Chinook SugarBeeters. The game was a defensive brawl, ending up with Belt holding an 18-9 lead by intermission.
After the break, the pattern remained the same with their stifling defense on the court, except Belt’s offense found their way. When the final horn sounded, the ladies remained unbeaten with a 58-23
victory. Aaliyah Gaylord led the way with the most points, scoring 15 by the end of the game.
Last night, the girls traveled up north to Box Elder and came away with a thrilling 48 – 47 overtime win to run their record to 3-0.
