Our Obituary Policy:

Great Falls Gazette encourages obituary submissions. Beginning January 1, 2024, we are implementing a new policy regarding Obituary Submissions. Obituaries may be submitted by Funeral Home, Funeral Director/Faith leader, family, or friends. Here are a few guidelines about submitting an Obituary.

Note the pricing below ONLY applies to the print version of the paper. We are happy to put larger Obituaries and more pictures online, it is simply to keep our print paper from being over-run by short story sized Obituaries. However, we want people to have the ability to have a large one in print.

  1. Submission size: We allow submissions of any size. However, Obituaries that are less than 350 typewritten words are free, submissions between 350 and 700 words are $15, and submissions over 700 words are $30. There is one exception to this rule. There is no charge if you only want a summary obituary in the printed paper and the full obituary online. Additional pictures may be added to an obituary for $2 per picture. We try to keep these fees as low as possible; however, we do not allow general advertising on these pages, so to pay for these sections, we are forced to charge fees for oversized obituaries. Obituaries from sources we have not worked with before will require pre-payment unless arrangements have been made in advance. (Note: We reserve the right to waive the fee if there are a few obituaries or if a submission is only slightly over the limit.)
  2. Try to send the highest DPI picture you can. If you need help, reach out. When we print a digital picture, low-DPI pictures are often fuzzy or pixelated. If you post multiple pictures, please list which ones you would like to be the “featured” pictures on the website and the order you wish them to be. All Obituaries are allowed at least one free picture, medium-sized (350-700 words, paid) are allowed at least two, and large-sized (700+ words) are allowed at least three. You may submit as many as you like, and if we have room, we are happy to include them.
  3. Generally, we’ll prefer Obituaries from the Family, then the Funeral Home or church, and finally friends.
  4. While we appreciate humor, this likely isn’t the place for it. Please think long and hard about putting the wrong humor in an Obituary. If unsure, consult a funeral director/pastor/faith leader before submitting an obituary. Generally, we’ll refuse obituaries that are in poor taste.
  5. If a family member wishes to submit an obituary, we recommend working with the person handling the arrangements. We work with Funeral Homes and churches all the time. This can take a large burden off your back. If you are set on submitting yourself, please complete the form completely or call us, and we can help.
  6. There is a section on the form that deals with proofreading and editing. We are happy to proofread your submission (for grammar and basic spelling). However, if you choose this option, you must approve any changes we make before it can be published. You want to do this as soon as possible so we don’t hold your obituary up unnecessarily.
  7. All obituaries must be submitted and edits approved by Wednesday at noon for inclusion in that week’s paper. Realize that after noon, we can not generally make changes or additions as the paper has to start printing Wednesday afternoon so our subscribers get their papers on time.
