I’m running for Cascade County Sheriff because I see three challenges for the Cascade County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO): the Detention facility, overall operating costs of the Office, and potential growth and retention of qualified Detention staff. Detention Officers have dealt with staffing shortages due to difficulties in hiring qualified personnel, along with retaining those individuals for any length of time. Adequate staffing can contribute to a safer work environment for officers and inmates, strengthen morale, and provide for a stronger allegiance to the CCSO. One such way to encourage retention is by allowing employees who want to promote and expand on their leadership responsibilities to do so on merit-based program and experience.

The Sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer of the county. His/her duty is to oversee the detention facility, enforce county laws, and provide for court security. The sheriff, as an elected official, answers to the voters in regards to issues that occur in the sheriff’s jurisdiction.

My initial priorities as Sheriff, if elected, centers on establishing working relationships with current employees and to encourage input from them that can enhance the work environment at CCSO.

Drugs and alcohol problems are evident throughout the county, and as Sheriff, I will work with all law enforcement to take a proactive approach to prevent the sale and distribution of illegal drugs and the sale of alcoholic beverages to underage individuals.

Overcrowding at the CCSO Detention facility is a problem that custodial facilities face across the country. As taxpayers are taking more of a stance against tax increases such as Mill Levys, alternative solutions need to be explored. One such option is to study the feasibility of a Bond measure that would fund the expansion of the existing facility or build a new structure on land currently owned by the county. Another option is to research grant funding for detention facilities to allay some of the costs from the taxpayer.

In regards to budget expenditures for the CCSO, I would call for a new, independent auditor approved by the State of Montana. An auditor’s review can assure if the CCSO is getting what is called “a good set of books.”

I believe that all county leaders need to practice “people over politics.” Put the citizen first, serve them, whether they voted for you or not, and practice transparency and accountability.
