Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, along with the Sun River Watershed Group and Bighorn Outdoor Specialists, will host a special event in June aimed at providing training and hands-on practice with inert bear spray. This workshop will also share essential tips on staying safe in bear country during camping and recreational activities. Set for Wednesday, June 24, the free event will commence at 5:30 p.m. at Bighorn Outdoor Specialists, located at 206 5th Street South in Great Falls.
During the workshop, FWP staff will cover various safety practices tailored for bear country, delve into bear biology, and offer guidance on how to effectively manage bear encounters. Participants will receive comprehensive training on the proper use and carrying of bear spray. This event welcomes families and individuals alike, and a food truck will be available for those interested in purchasing a meal. Attendees are encouraged to bring a camp chair for seating during the event.
One of the highlights of the workshop will be the opportunity to practice using inert bear spray in realistic charging bear demonstrations, contingent upon weather conditions. Participants are reminded to leave any personal bear spray at home for safety reasons.
As Montana is a well-known bear country, it is crucial to take preventative measures to mitigate the risk of bear encounters. Carrying bear spray, understanding how to use it, and being ready to act quickly are essential. Traveling in groups and planning outings during daylight hours can further enhance safety. Making noise, particularly in areas with streams or dense vegetation, can help alert bears to your presence, as most will steer clear of humans. It’s also important to avoid areas with carcasses, concentrations of scavengers, and to watch for signs of bear activity, such as scat, diggings, and disturbed earth.
To safeguard against attracting bears, keep all food and other attractants securely stowed and adhere to food storage regulations. Most importantly, remember to never approach a bear. For more information, please visit https://fwp.mt.gov
