Chief Karsten Hovland served the Ulm community as Chief of the Ulm Volunteer Fire Department since 2012. He passed away unexpectedly at the age of 43. Karsten’s dedication to helping his friends and neighbors was evident in his role as Chief.

The community will hold a funeral processional for him on April 18, 2026. The service will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Croxford’s Funeral Home in Great Falls. A final call is anticipated to take place prior to 11:00 a.m. on Channel 963, followed by a fire truck procession, and a reception which will be held at 12:00 p.m. at the Ulm VFD fire station. Hamburgers and select sides will be provided. Guests are welcome to bring additional sides or desserts.

Everyone is invited to attend and honor Karsten. Staging for the processional will begin at 9:00 a.m. near Croxford’s Funeral Home. The procession will depart promptly from the front of Croxford’s and proceed toward the Ulm Fire Department.

Participating departments and their apparatus are asked to approach via 14th Street or 15th Street and stage in the parking lot of Montana Federal Credit Union or near the Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art. Once these areas reach capacity, additional units may stage along Central Avenue or in other nearby available parking areas.
