Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks game wardens are seeking public assistance in gathering information about recent incidents involving blow darts.
On March 23rd, wardens, along with the Musselshell County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a complaint regarding a mule deer fawn that had been killed by a blow dart in the 100 block of 5th Street West in Roundup. FWP wardens reiterated in a press release that deer can only be lawfully killed during the established fall hunting season, and hunting is prohibited within city limits. Additionally, blow darts are not a legal method for taking deer in Montana.
In a separate matter, Montana FWP game wardens are also asking for the public’s help following multiple reports of ducks being injured by blow darts in Billings. Several incidents have been confirmed at Shiloh Conservation Ponds and Rose Park in 2025 and 2026, where ducks were found shot with blow darts. Similar to deer, ducks may only be legally harvested during the established fall hunting season, hunting is not allowed within city limits, and blow darts are not a legal method for taking migratory birds in Montana.
Help protect Montana’s wildlife. If you have any information regarding these incidents, please report it at https://fwp.mt.gov/enforcement/tipmont. Tips may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000. Your information can make a difference.
