The Great Falls Public Library invites the public to the Cordingley Room for a new Learning with Leigh Lecture on Tuesday, January 13 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm! Leigh Larson will discuss the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution and the way these documents forged our country and the many shades it reflects today.
The Declaration of Independence and Constitution have guided the United States since the nation’s inception. The Declaration has long been considered the ‘spirit’ and the Constitution as ‘the body’ of American ideology. The Constitution, at 4,400 words, is the oldest and shortest written Constitution of any major government in the world. While we revere the documents and our Founding Fathers today, we’ll examine the controversial responses by the public at the time. This presentation will use historic press articles, correspondence, and legal documents and aims to give a high-level overview of the precarious nature of creating the novel American Experiment, the public’s response, and the sentiments felt by the Founding Fathers towards their creation until their deathbed.
Leigh is a Texan living in Montana. Raised between two worlds, she fell in love with the outdoors and writing through her small town east Texas dad, and got her passion for women’s advocacy through her women’s healthcare doctorate nurse practitioner and lobbyist mother in Fort Worth.
She graduated as a presidential scholar and as a Jefferson Scholar from the University of Texas at Austin with a BA in International Relations. She joined the USAF Reserve Chaplain Corps’ candidate program while in seminary at Phillips Theological in Tulsa, but left the faith and ministry for the financially-lucrative software engineer world. Seven years later, she wound up finishing her Masters in Theology and wrote her thesis on Concerns for the US Military Chaplaincy and is currently expanding the thesis into a book.
She lives in Great Falls, where she works for herself as a web designer while producing social media content about American history, theology, politics, and her travels. She is a children’s book author of three books about her dog’s (Professor Huckleberry) adventures in national parks. Leigh enjoys traveling across the country and world, but loves nothing more than being with her dog and loved ones watching sunsets over the Highwoods.
