The City-County Health Department recently announced the deaths of two Cascade County residents due to influenza in the closing days of 2025. Both individuals were under the age of 70. These deaths were not the first reported in Montana during the 2025-2026 respiratory illness season. Over the past four weeks, 393 influenza infections have been confirmed in Cascade County, with 38 requiring hospitalization.

To limit the spread of influenza and other respiratory illnesses, the CCHD encourages all residents to wash their hands regularly or use hand sanitizer and to stay home when they are sick. Immunization remains the best protection against serious outcomes, such as hospitalization or death due to infections. Flu and COVID-19 vaccinations are available at CCHD, both by walk-in or by appointment. Additionally, immunization for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is available by appointment at CCHD.

During the 2024-2025 season, there were 235 confirmed RSV cases in Cascade County. Immunizations are available for specific eligibility groups, while supplies last. These groups include:

  • Adults aged 60 and older
  • Women who are 32-36 weeks pregnant (this immunization provides protection against severe RSV illness in the baby for up to six months after birth)
  • Newborns and babies under one year of age who are born during or entering their first RSV season
  • Children up to 24 months old who remain at risk for severe RSV disease during their second RSV season
