The new Benefis Pediatric Coat Closet already is making a difference for young patients in need.
Stocked with coats, hats, toiletries, and clothes, this closet is a lifeline for children and teens who are homeless, in foster care, or lack basic necessities.
“A new coat or toiletries can be a big boost to their self-esteem and emotional well-being,” said Kally Hasenkrug, a pediatric nurse practitioner who organized the project. “It’s something of their own when they leave the hospital, helping them feel more secure.”
Donors can contribute money to Benefis Foundation’s Pediatric Coat Closet Fund, drop off new items at Benefis Foundation, or shop from the Amazon.com wishlist at https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2DDT3TJCSY5XN. Besides new clothing and toiletries, recipients also could benefit from gift cards for bus passes, coffee shops, Uber, groceries, and fast food.
“We have had quite a few teenagers come in with only the clothes they’re wearing. They would leave with nothing; that’s where we saw a need,” Hasenkrug said. “They have been grateful.”
