Halloween is a fun time for many people of all ages, a time to dress up, go to haunted houses, and watch the kids trick or treat. It can also be a time of anxiety for many.

In this lucky number 13 issue, we will share several tips for the best Halloween experiences.

Let people know where you will be going, use the buddy system, and avoid going out alone.

Drivers, make sure your headlights are on so you can spot kids, drive slowly, and stay alert. Trick-or-treaters might not be paying attention to their surroundings.

For adults driving around to that big party, don’t forget to have a designated driver.

Make sure you have a well-fit costume. Wear shoes that are easy to walk in, and your costume is the proper length, so you don’t trip. If you are wearing masks, make sure they fit properly and don’t restrict your eyesight.

Have kids carry glow sticks, and flashlights, or use reflective tape on costumes and bags to help them see and be seen by drivers.

Turn on lights, so people know you’re home and accepting guests (or turn them off if you aren’t or when you run out of candy).

Keep the entrance well-illuminated, so people can see the pathway to your door.

The largest spike in allergy admissions to the emergency room is on Halloween night. Double-check all treats before allowing your kids to enjoy them.

Keep pets in rooms that are secure and away from windows at the front of the house where they can scare trick-or-treaters or be scared themselves.

Be sure to remind your child that it is never okay to enter a stranger’s home, or vehicle.
