Great Falls Fire Rescue has also provided updates on the fire which occurred at 1813 6th Ave N. on Sunday, December 8th. The cause of the fire was determined to be the improper disposal of smoking materials. GFFR responded to three fires in less than 24 hours due to this issue. It’s important to note that smoking materials should NOT be placed into pots filled with potting soil, as the ingredients in potting soil are well-known fire starters.
Some tips for proper disposal of smoking materials include:
1. Use a deep, sturdy ashtray and place it away from anything that can easily catch fire.
2. Do NOT discard cigarettes in mulch, potted plants, landscaping, or any other materials that could ignite.
3. Before throwing away cigarette butts and ashes, ensure they are completely extinguished. Dousing them with water or sand is the best method.
4. Do not flick cigarettes off a balcony.
Please remember to dispose of smoking materials safely to prevent fires.
