In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and established the week in which this date occurs as National Police Week. This designation, enacted through a joint resolution of Congress, serves to pay special tribute to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty while ensuring the safety and protection of others.
The GFPD has mourned the loss of five officers including Shane Chadwick (1994), Segval Semingsen (1935), Luke Curry (1898), Frank Connolly (1920), and Comodore Downing (1895).
This week is also dedicated to honoring those officers who have sustained career-ending injuries while on duty. Thanks to all Peace Officers for their service and the sacrifices they have made.
