As election time approaches, we are once again getting asked about our stance on this candidate or that one, or political issues. The political process is very important to America, and we highly respect it. First and foremost, we FIRMLY believe that a persons political stance is their own, and if they wish to share it, that’s fine. If they do not wish to share their stance, that is fine as well. The Gazette is in a unique position, we write stories and carry content that many like and enjoy, without as little political bias and influence as possible. We do not endorse ANY Candidate, Party, Measure, or philosophy. We merely provide a platform for reasonable discussion, the platform is our Opinion pages.
Political articles, letters to the editor, and political ads are all written by non-employees and are in the opinion section. We do have some limitations on political articles, they may not contain personal attacks for any reason. They must be written by or approved by, the person being discussed, and they should contain content useful to the public. A politician sending in an article about their platform is useful. A politician ranting about how their opponent is a traitor, or fascist (a horribly overused term honestly!) violates two rules, it’s a personal attack AND not useful to the community. For candidates, write about the platform and why people should vote for them.
Measures should be debated civilly without personal attacks, it’s okay to discuss the pros and cons of a measure, however attacks on people will never be tolerated. Sending in unsubstantiated claims about a measure will likewise cause your submission, both stories and articles, to be declined for publication.
Generally, if we have an issue with either a letter or article, we will contact you and let you know that we can not publish it. Generally, we’ll give you a couple of chances to fix it. Do realize, we are a small paper and don’t have the man hours to write your article for you or to send stories or letters back and forth for a long period of time.
Threats against persons or property, or vague threats of violence, sextortion, or indication threats of criminal activity WILL get you referred to law enforcement. We take such threats seriously, they are not funny or acceptable in any situation.
