On Saturday, September 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., a unique opportunity will be available for bicyclists and hikers to access and traverse the Missouri River at Cochrane Dam. This access is typically restricted; however, NorthWestern Energy and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks are jointly offering this special occasion as part of National Public Lands Day 2025.

This event provides enjoyment of trails along both banks of the Missouri River in the vicinity of Great Falls, enabling participants to complete a loop that previously required an out-and-back route. Trail users may utilize the River’s Edge Trail to navigate from the northern shore to the southern shore (or vice versa) to reach Cochrane Dam. Upon arrival, visitors may proceed to hike or walk their bicycles across the dam.

Participants should prepare for a minimum five-mile hike or ride and are advised to wear appropriate footwear and carry an adequate supply of drinking water. There is limited shade along the trail, and the area is noted for the presence of rattlesnakes. Participants are encouraged to arrange for shuttle services or park a vehicle at their intended destination, as park staff will not be able to provide such services.

Trail users should expect increased foot and bicycle traffic during this event. Bicyclists are urged to maintain control of their speed, yield to all trail users, adhere to the right side of the trail, and announce their presence by ringing a bell or verbally notifying others before passing. Certain portions of the trail are classified as moderately difficult, and participants should plan accordingly.

For further information regarding trail recommendations or other inquiries, please contact park staff at 406-727-1212 or visit the interactive River’s Edge Trail Map at greatfallsmt.net/recreation/interactive-rivers-edge-trail-map.
