First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park will host two ranger-led hikes in September, and the park invites visitors to enjoy a unique walk through the park to enjoy either the morning sunrise or the evening sunset and full moon.
On Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1, a two-hour guided sunrise hike will leave the visitor center at 6 a.m. and hike to the top of the cliffs to observe sunrise while learning about the history of the park.
The September full moon is traditionally known as the Corn Moon, and First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park is offering visitors a chance to enjoy the Corn Moon with a ranger-guided hike on Saturday Sept. 6. The hike will begin at the nature center at 7 p.m., to enjoy watching the full moon rise at 7:38 p.m., with sunset following shortly after that time.
Both hikes are family-friendly and consist of moderately strenuous three-mile loops with elevation gains of about 400 feet. Advanced registration is required for the hikes, and a $4 fee applies for each hiker. The hikes are limited to 25 people, and reservations can be made by calling the park at 406-866-2217.
The park is located about 3.5 miles north of Ulm, just off I-15 at exit 270. The park’s visitor center will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Labor Day. For more information visit fwp.mt.gov/stateparks/first-peoples-buffalo-jump
