As industrial wind generation complexes continue to grow across Montana, Dawson County farmers and ranchers have voted to stop the growth of mega wind towers in western Dawson County. A large contingent of landowners across the county have filed papers to create a “large structure zone”. The zone would prohibit structures from exceeding 199 feet or about the size of a 20-story building.
The regulations have been approved by the landowners with a super majority of 72 percent of the participants. The zoning requirements grant the historical 145-year agriculture sector an exemption from the zoning limitations.
This voluntary move on the part of the farmers and ranchers would represent the first time in Montana that citizens have used existing state statutes to limit the size of structures such as industrial wind towers. The filing will move onto the county commissioners for final approval.
