On the evening of March 4, 2025, at approximately 9:00 PM, Great Falls Fire Rescue responded to an alarm regarding a residential fire at 517 6th Avenue South. The first arriving battalion chief observed smoke emanating from the gable ends of the structure and flames breaking through the roof.
Upon arrival, the battalion chief met with the resident, who confirmed that he had successfully evacuated himself, along with his dog and cat. No additional occupants were in the home at the time of the incident. Due to the active fire situation, a second alarm was activated, which summoned off-duty personnel from Great Falls Fire Rescue, while the Montana Air National Guard and the Malmstrom Air Force fire departments were engaged to provide support.
Engine 4 was the initial unit from Great Falls Fire Rescue to arrive on the scene. Upon entering the premises, the crew identified an active fire in the attic space. Firefighters undertook swift and effective measures to extinguish the flames, ensuring that the fire did not spread to other sections of the residence.
Currently, the property is deemed uninhabitable. The occupant was provided with information regarding assistance from the American Red Cross. The preliminary investigation determined that the cause of the fire was attributed to the failure of a bathroom ceiling heat lamp and fan.
