Montana State Law stipulates “requiring headlights to be used from one-half hour after sunset until one-half hour before sunrise the following morning.”
However while driving the streets and highways around Great Falls I have encountered at least 2 vehicles per night being operated without lights illuminated. One night coming from a late night event, driving on a one way street, I encountered a car without tail lights glowing that beautiful warning red light that I was following a vehicle. Upon stopping at a red light I approached the vehicle, knocking on the driver window, to advise they had no lights on. She stated they were on. I encountered this same elderly lady a few days later; I introduced myself as that crazy person who knocked on her car window a few nights before to advise her lights were not on. Throughout the conversation a discovery was made; she did not know how to turn them on and was under the impression that her Park Lights glowing were her headlights. We went out to her vehicle and she learned how to turn Headlights on by turning the dial to “AUTO”. Using this feature ensures your head and tail lights turn on at dusk or pour visibility driving conditions.
People, please teach your parents, children, or new vehicle drivers how to turn the headlamps on the vehicle they are driving. When headlamps are operating so are the taillights. Operating a vehicle during the dark hours, fog or rain without lights is extremely hazardous to all.
