On February 19th, adverse road conditions resulted in multiple vehicles sliding off the road, including a school bus transporting children. This situation was particularly hazardous due to the extreme cold temperatures. Undersheriff Van Dyken, who was present at the scene, summoned all available deputies to his location. He organized their transportation to the elementary school using patrol cars.

“While I was pulling into the Sheriff’s office, two high school-aged students slid off the road,” explained Sheriff Jesse Slaughter in a media release. “Two of our Detention Officers, about to leave the office after a night shift, sprang into action and helped the students with their situation.  They spent over 45 minutes in subzero temperatures helping while not being dressed for the conditions.  This was a dangerous situation due to the temperature and the hazardous road conditions.”

The team’s hard work and quick thinking helped keep everyone safe from the extreme cold and to their destinations. “I’m so proud of the love and compassion our people have for our community,” explained Sheriff Slaughter. “We are so lucky to live in such a great place, I’m truly humbled.”
