Carrie Jensen professionally worked as a CPA for several years in Great Falls. After some time, she grew tired of it and found herself trying to assess her future and became the owner of Yarn & Honey which was formerly known as Pam’s Knit ‘N’ Stitch.
This little store is part of a 30-year history of knitting and crocheting in Great Falls. Ruth’s Knit ‘N’ Stitch was originally owned by Ruth before it was transferred to her daughter-in-law, Pam who operated the business for 25 years. As Pam’s Knit ‘N’ Stitch, it relocated multiple times within downtown Great Falls.
“I began visiting Pam’s Knit ‘N’ Stitch back when I was in junior high,” explained Carrie. “I was a big cross stitcher, and it was the only place I could find fabric that I liked, and I could get everything I wanted. My grandmother used to shop at Ruth’s, so we were very familiar with it. When I returned to Great Falls after college, I became part of an embroidery guild through the store, where I met many people, and eventually, Pam taught me how to knit.”
Two ladies bought the store in 2017 and in 2019 decided to sell it. “When the two gals that bought it from her said they were selling it, I was in the middle of trying to figure out the rest of my life, so it just kind of all hit at the right time and I jumped and decided to try something different,” explained Carrie.
After one year at 9th Avenue, Carrie decided to relocate the store back downtown to 610 Central Avenue. In September, they moved to 920 Central Avenue, only three blocks from the previous address with plenty of parking.
For the past five years, the little shop has run under the name Yarn and Honey. This name reflects Carrie’s family’s heritage in beekeeping, as she is a Smoot associated with Smoot Honey in Power, Montana, where they have engaged in beekeeping for over 60 years.
Yarn and Honey provides an extensive selection of yarns for knitting and crocheting, alongside a dedicated stitching section featuring embroidery and cross-stitch. They stock all essential tools, including needles and hooks. Additionally, they conduct various classes, including knitting, needle felting, and spinning classes. Carrie has recently become an Ashford dealer, permitting her to offer spinning wheels and looms as well.
Yarn & Honey has open table sessions available three days a week. There’s a table in the back where people come in and work on various projects. Sometimes they knit, crochet, or stitch, and sometimes the spinners join. This is a lovely community setting where people can socialize while they work on their crafts.
