Today, November 10th, at approximately 11:45 AM, a parent alerted 911 dispatchers that their 14-year-old child had threatened to harm themselves during a phone call. The youth was home, located outside the city limits, prompting dispatchers to send deputies from the Cascade County Sheriff/Coroner’s Office to check on them. As deputies were en route, the youth boarded a school bus headed to Great Falls High School.

Once the deputies received updates about the situation, one of them began to follow the bus, coordinating with the Great Falls Police Department (GFPD) to have officers ready to meet it upon arrival. School resource officers (SROs) were notified and promptly ordered a shelter-in-place status at the high school.

Upon the bus’s arrival, staff members alerted the SROs that the youth was armed with a knife. The SROs, along with a CCSO deputy, boarded the bus but faced resistance as the youth refused to comply with commands. Using less-lethal impact tools, law enforcement was able to safely take the youth into custody.

Following the incident, emergency medical personnel evaluated the youth, who was subsequently placed into the custody of the Cascade County Juvenile Detention Center. The youth faced charges of Disorderly Conduct and Obstructing a Peace Officer. Fortunately, there were no injuries to staff members, students, or law enforcement during the event.
