Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks game wardens are currently seeking information concerning three elk that were unlawfully shot and left to waste in the Sun River Wildlife Management Area near Augusta earlier this week.

The inquiry began when a hunter on an adjacent property reported observing a dead elk on the morning of Tuesday, November 11th. Upon arrival at the Shed Creek drainage, located on the southern end of the WMA, the wardens discovered a cow elk and two elk calves. An examination revealed that all three animals had been shot, presumably a few days prior. A special license is required to hunt antlerless elk within the Sun River WMA.

“These Sun River elk represent a unique and historical migratory elk herd in Montana,” stated FWP game warden Per Wolfisberg in a press release. “Shooting and deliberately wasting three of them is disrespectful to not only the animals, but also to the citizens and hunters of Montana. We are asking anyone who may have seen or heard anything unusual in that area to contact us and help us catch the people who committed this crime.”

The investigation is ongoing. Individuals possessing information are invited to contact game warden Per Wolfisberg at 406-781-0244 or visit tipmont.mt.gov. Informants are assured anonymity and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
