Cascade County Attorney Josh Racki, alongside Great Falls Police Chief Jeff Newton and Sheriff Jesse Slaughter, is urging residents to take simple precautions to combat the rising trend of firearms being stolen from unlocked vehicles. They have observed a significant increase in these thefts, many of which involve firearms that eventually end up in the possession of juveniles.
“In recent months, law enforcement has seen a sharp increase in firearm thefts from vehicles,” stated County Attorney Josh Racki in a media release. “Many of those stolen guns are later being found in the hands of juveniles. This is preventable. We’re asking for the public’s help to stop these thefts before they turn into tragedies.”
Most of these incidents occur when vehicles are left unlocked overnight. Offenders, often juveniles, engage in “car hopping,” where they check for unlocked doors and rummage for valuables, including firearms. The bulk of guns recovered from young offenders were stolen from vehicles that weren’t secured.
“The law allows adults to carry firearms in their vehicles,” continued Racki, “and we support that right. But we’re asking folks to take one more step: always lock your car and remove your firearm when you park for the night.”
“We can’t be everywhere at once,” Chief Newton stated. “Locking your car and removing firearms is one of the simplest, most effective ways to keep guns out of the hands of thieves and, ultimately, out of the hands of kids. We need everyone in the community to do their part.”
“We’re strong supporters of the Second Amendment,” stated Sheriff Slaughter. “But with that comes the duty to secure your firearm. These thefts are crimes of opportunity, and by eliminating that opportunity, we make our community safer.”
The Cascade County Attorney’s Office, along with the Sheriff’s Office and the Great Falls Police Department, all emphasized that community awareness is key to preventing these crimes. All community members are urged to help safeguard their neighborhoods and community by locking their vehicles and securing their firearms.
