In this week’s municipal election, voters approved Ordinance 3278, which restricts the types of fireworks that can be sold and discharged in Great Falls. The result of this vote was yes to limit 8,766 (54.6%) vs. no to not limit 7,288 (45.4%).
As a result, the sale and use of fireworks designed to leave the ground or explode upon activation are now prohibited. Permitted fireworks include sparklers, fountains, ground spinners, snap caps, smoke devices, and novelty items.
With the voters’ decision to regulate fireworks, the City Commission and relevant departments will develop an enforcement plan for future holidays when fireworks can be used, such as New Year’s and July 4th. The first step in this enforcement effort will be to educate the community about the new ordinance and encourage voluntary compliance. Future enforcement plans presented to the Commission may include a review of fines and penalties.
Currently, violations of firework regulations can lead to a notice requiring the individual to appear in Municipal Court, where they may face fines of up to $1,000, have illegal fireworks seized, and possibly see recommendations for revoking the permits of wholesalers or retailers.
While this change might take time to adjust to, the City encourages fireworks enthusiasts to contribute to the People’s Park and Recreation Foundation’s annual Fourth of July fireworks show. Donations are tax-deductible, and additional support for this community event will help ensure a safe celebration with a public fireworks display.
“If everyone donated what they used to spend on personal fireworks, Great Falls could host the biggest, safest fireworks display in Montana,” stated City Manager Greg Doyon in a press release. “It’s a great way to keep the celebration alive.”
