The Simms School recently held the Pages for Power Reading Challenge, designed as a school-wide competition culminating in a live bench press event.
From November 1st to November 24th, students in grades 6 through 12 tracked the number of pages they read during their study hall sessions. The cumulative reading totals determined the weight and number of repetitions that Sheriff’s Office Deputy Andre Lugo would be required to lift in front of the entire school community.
Reading targets were established at 1,200 pages for each grade level in middle school and 2,200 pages for high school students. Surpassing these benchmarks would result in an increase in both the weight and repetitions that Deputy Lugo would lift. Students monitored their progress daily, with updates displayed through hallways and classrooms.
On November 21st, the final results of the Pages for Power Reading Challenge were announced.
In the final event, Deputy Lugo successfully bench-pressed 405 pounds. The 6th grade emerged victorious with a total of 4,480 pages read, contributing to a remarkable overall total of 15,146 pages read by students.
This program aimed to enhance literacy, promote school spirit, and strengthen positive relationships between students and law enforcement. Objectives that were successfully achieved. Congratulations to all participants for their outstanding achievements.
