In the midst of the government shutdown and the economic hardships many in our community are facing, Destany Alvarado took action by creating a Facebook group called “Great Falls Community: Families Helping Families.” The purpose of this group is to address the immediate needs of local families.
This group connects neighbors, businesses, and families who want to help with those who have indicated they are in need. Each family is assigned a designated number, and the needs of eight families are posted at a time. Their demographics and requests for assistance, particularly food, are shared anonymously to protect their privacy.
Currently, there are over 70 families in need, and this number continues to grow as the group expands. Many families facing hardship are hardworking individuals. Some with children, others are elderly or disabled.
This process ensures the anonymity of families in need while also respecting the privacy of those who wish to help. By sharing their specific needs, these families can receive support without judgment or invasion of privacy. The diversity of families means that each request for help is unique, making this program particularly impactful. Families who choose to adopt others in need can personalize their assistance. For instance, one family recently included homemade cookies as part of their donation.
To raise awareness, Destany plans to create flyers with a QR code that links to the Facebook group, allowing interested individuals to both offer and seek assistance. She is looking for support to cover the costs of these flyers and volunteers to help distribute them in local locations.
For more information on how you can help or receive assistance through this group, please contact them on Facebook, and watch for updates in The Great Falls Gazette.
