Portage, Montana residents, 1925. The History Museum & Research Center, Cascade County Album Collection.

Get ready for a night of glamour and jazz as The History Museum & Research Center presents its annual Jazz Night event, the Bootlegger Ball, on October 25, 2025. The event will take place in the museum’s Ozark Club event room, which will be transformed into a secretive speakeasy for the evening.

The Bootlegger Ball will feature a specialty cocktail menu, including three signature prohibition-era drinks: the Gin Rickey, Mint Julep, and Bee’s Knees, as well as a full cash bar with draft beer favorites. Guests will also enjoy a choice of three entrees, Steak Diane, Chicken à la King, or Eggplant Parmesan, served with a side salad and scalloped potatoes, and finished with a classic pineapple upside-down cake with whipped cream for dessert.

The evening’s festivities will include live jazz music from the John Gemberling Jazz Combo, a six-person band that will play the top hits of the roaring ’20s. Costumes are not required, but guests are encouraged to dress up in their finest 1920s attire for a costume contest, with photo opportunities available with a period-appropriate Model T car. A silent auction will also be held, featuring a curated collection of items.

The Bootlegger Ball is a ticketed event, with member tickets at $65 and non-members at $80. Tickets can be purchased in advance, and guests are encouraged to buy early to secure their spot.

Bootlegger Ball is sponsored by the Celtic Cowboy, D. A. Davidson, and JCCS.

Businesses interested in sponsoring a table at the event can contact Museum Director Connie Constan for more information. Table sponsorships provide advertising perks for the business.

To get into the mood for the Bootlegger Ball, visitors can stop by the museum to see the Spirits of Cascade County: Bootlegging, Bureaucracy, and Breweries exhibition. The museum will also be sharing Prohibition Era-themed content on social media.
