Firefighters have been working extremely hard to keep wildfires contained so far this year. Several of these fires have been completely contained, while others are now in mop-up status.
The Gill Gulch Fire, reported on August 4th and situated about seven miles south of Lincoln, Montana, has been actively managed by firefighters who have made significant progress in establishing fire lines around its perimeter. With ongoing efforts to create contingency lines and shaded fuel breaks, chipping operations are taking place to clear woody materials along Fields Gulch Road and Stemple Pass Road. As of August 9, 2025, the Gill Gulch Fire covers 27 acres and involves mixed timber with a heavy load of dead and down fuels.
The Sucker Creek Fire, which began burning on July 27 two miles north of Lincoln, has been successfully contained at 100%. This fire, caused by lightning, burned across 55 acres mainly in grass and timber. Fire crews are now focused on mop-up operations, ensuring no remaining hot spots are left to reignite.
The Big Bear Fire, sparked by lightning back on July 9, has impacted an extensive area of approximately 14,935 acres, with 70% of its perimeter contained. This fire is under patrol status due to minimal current activity, with firefighting crews collaborating across multiple national forests to coordinate efforts and inform any affected permit holders. Recently, precipitation has slowed its progression, particularly toward the west along the Salmon River, but as dry conditions return, further growth may be anticipated.
