On July 2nd, Montana experienced extensive lightning, leading to several new fire ignitions across the state. One significant incident is the Buggy Gulch Fire, which is approximately 20 miles south of Dillon and can be seen from I-15. It spans 63 acres, has a containment of 50%, and started on BLM land under DNRC fire protection. Due to the challenging terrain, local firefighters, supported by two DNRC helicopters, have been hiking into combat the fire. They are currently reinforcing containment lines and conducting mop-up operations to extinguish any remnants of heat.
The Bear Creek fire is estimated to cover 10-20 acres and is located 11 miles west of Lolo, primarily burning in timber. As of the evening of July 3rd, resources dedicated to this fire include two engines and a fuels module, with additional resources on the way. Fortunately, no structures are at risk, and no evacuations have been ordered.
The Jericho Mountain Fire, reported on June 15th, has reached 482 acres and is now 95% contained. This fire is located about 5 miles south of Macdonald Pass off Highway 12 in Powell County. It will transfer to a Type 3 management team as of July 2nd.
