On March 3, 2025, deputies from the Cascade County Sheriff’s Office responded to a property located on McIver Road following reports from neighbors concerning a horse in distress and others in deteriorating condition. Upon arrival, deputies discovered two malnourished horses that were lacking food, water, and shelter, in addition to the presence of two deceased horses. The property owner, Susan Kay Jones, acknowledged that the horses had not been fed for a minimum of one week and had also been deprived of water for an extended duration. Based on the condition of the animals, deputies assessed that the horses had been without food for a significantly longer period.

In light of the immediate danger posed to the surviving animals, a search warrant was obtained, and the remaining horses were seized for emergency care. Susan Jones pleaded guilty to one count of animal cruelty in the Cascade County Justice Court and was ordered to surrender the animals.

The Montana Horse Sanctuary provided essential support in the rescue and rehabilitation of the surviving horses. Following nearly five weeks of intensive care at a veterinary clinic in Great Falls, the mares are now recuperating in a specialized foster home and will be made available for adoption once they achieve full health.

“We applaud the tremendous work done by the Cascade County Sheriff’s Office in investigating this case and responding immediately to the plight of these horses,” explained Jane Heath, president of Montana Horse Sanctuary in a press release. “Both of the mares are very sweet and it would be ideal if they can find a home together.”

The sanctuary invites inquiries regarding the adoption of the mares. The projected cost for their recovery is estimated at $6,000 per horse for the first year. Donations to support their care are warmly welcomed.
