Matthew Wade was involved in a motorcycle accident while riding with a group of friends between Augusta and Simms on April 6th. Matt was third in line, with two of his friends in front of him.

The group encountered a small herd of deer crossing the road. One of his friends managed to stop in time to avoid the deer, however, Matt came over the hill and was unable to react quickly enough and collided with the rear of his friend’s motorcycle, causing him to lose control and veer into the ditch.

“He was not with us for a solid five minutes,” explained his wife, Sarah Eckman. “One of his buddies had to revive him.”

Matt was airlifted to Benefis Hospital that evening by Mercy Flight. Upon arrival, Matt Wade was diagnosed with multiple skull fractures, orbital fractures, several brain bleeds, a pelvic fracture, and a major stroke, accompanied by several smaller ischemic strokes. He was placed on a ventilator and induced into a medically induced coma. Currently, he is breathing independently but continues to require supplemental oxygen from the ventilator. Recently, he has shown signs of progress by opening his eyes for the first time.

A craniotomy was performed to alleviate pressure on his brain by removing a section of his skull. Medical professionals anticipate that the skull piece will not be replaced for two to three weeks. Depending on his recovery, Matt may be transferred to an acute care facility in Billings if he remains on the ventilator. Should he be weaned off the ventilator, he will be moved to a brain rehabilitation center out of state. His wife Sarah, has expressed her commitment to accompany him throughout this journey, even if it necessitates resigning from her current employment.

Matt Wade is employed as a technician at Bison Ford, while Sarah Eckman serves as the Director of Development at NeighborWorks Great Falls. Matt also holds the position of Junior Vice Commander of VFW Post 4669 in Black Eagle.

To support him during this challenging time, the Black Eagle Community Center will host a fundraiser on April 21st from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The event will include a spaghetti dinner, with a silent auction, a raffle, and a 50/50 drawing. Furthermore, the upcoming Chicken Fried Steak Night at the Black Eagle Community Center will also contribute to Matt’s recovery efforts as well as a GoFundMe, which is in place.

Matt Wade faces a lengthy recovery process, and the family is deeply appreciative of the outpouring of support from the community and friends.
