Another excellent basketball season for the University of Providence women’s program ended in disappointment last Friday night.
Coach Bill Himmelberg’s Argos led most of the game against the College of Idaho before losing 58-56 in overtime at McLaughlin Center on the UP campus.
The College of Idaho squad trailed by four points in overtime but scored the final six points of the game to prevail, as Ashton Adams sank a short field goal with 2.4 seconds left for the game-winner.
The loss ended the season for the Argos with a 22-8 record, one year after UP went all the way to the NAIA Championship game before losing to Dordt (Iowa).
Senior guard Ashlee Maldonado led the Argos with 13 points in her final game. Sophomore post players Keanna Salave’a and Ainsley Thurber added 11 points apiece, and senior guard Kolby Pimperton of Belt scored 9 in her last game for UP.
The Argos won the Frontier Conference tournament two weeks ago and drew a No. 5 seeding for the Sectional Tournament.
Three other Frontier Conference women’s teams were also selected for the 64-team field, but all lost in their first-round games Friday. Carroll College lost 72-63 against Wayland Baptist of Texas; Montana Tech fell 81 63 to Dakota State; and Rocky Mountain lost 81-63 to St. Francis of Illinois.
