Col. Robert (Bob) Gruenhagen, age 92, passed away on January 15, 2025, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Colonel Bob’s life was marked by dedication to his family and a deep commitment to his work. A cherished companion and a friend to many, he could converse on any topic. Growing up in Great Falls, Montana, he was mentored by airmen and enlisted in the Montana Air National Guard in 1947. After various assignments, he established the first jet engine maintenance shop and was appointed Maintenance Control Officer. Moving to Texas in 1966, he served with the 136th Airlift Wing located Naval Air Station Dallas (Hensley Field) and retired as a full Colonel in 1987.

He was called to active duty for the Korean War with the 186th Fighter Squadron in 1951 and served at stateside bases with SAC and TAC, as well as overseas with the Icelandic Defense Force. His duties included assignments as flight chief, line chief, and quality control inspector. Robert authored the seminal work titled Mustang: The Story of the P-51 Fighter, published in 1969, and was a mentor to many in the aviation community.

Active in aviation organizations, he worked tirelessly to maintain vintage aircraft with the Commemorative Air Force. He also was active in his community, volunteering for council committees and Meals on Wheels.

Robert is survived by his daughter, Susan Schrade (James); his sister, Beverly Johnston; his brother-in-law, Ed Law; his niece, Helen Gerringa; his nephew, Jay Johnston; and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Helen (Jaraczeski) Gruenhagen, wife, Jean, and his daughter, Stephanie Ball.
