Helena’s Playable Playgrounds is dedicated to the development and enhancement of playgrounds in and around Helena, as well as throughout the state of Montana.
In addition to traditional playgrounds, they specialize in the construction of gaga ball pits, a recreational activity that has garnered considerable popularity among middle school students. Regrettably, as children transition to middle school, their access to playground facilities is frequently diminished. To address this issue, Helena’s Playable Playgrounds has initiated a program that invites Boy Scouts across Montana to undertake Eagle Scout projects at local middle schools. They are prepared to fund the construction of gaga pits for these projects, which offer an engaging variation of dodge ball played in a contained environment.
“I have an autistic son. When we first moved to Helena they didn’t have a playground that fit his needs,” explained Stacy Sommer. “I knew as a mom I needed to do something for my child. I started learning about playgrounds. Now we will install playground 14 this year.”
Helena’s Playable Playgrounds enlists community volunteers, providing them with the opportunity to learn the process of playground construction. They also provide assistance to various entities in the area of grant writing for recreational initiatives.
Helena’s Playable Playgrounds has been actively engaged in their mission for approximately 13 years. They strive to avoid relying on municipal or school district financial resources, with their primary fundraising effort being an annual event known as the Princess Tea Party. During this event, they typically have around 50 volunteers, along with a kitchen crew and table setters, totaling approximately 100 volunteers, and consistently sell nearly 600 tickets for this event. The proceeds from this event are utilized to secure additional grants.
