Have you ever wanted to learn about flintknapping and historical weapons? If so, come on down to the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center on Saturday, December 21st from 9 am to 4 pm.
The LCIC is proud to get the opportunity to host two experts in traditional skills. Flintknapper George Bryce and historical weapons expert Jimmy Ray will be in attendance to share their knowledge with the public.
George Bryce will be coming in from Helena, and will be doing a live flintknapping demonstration. Flintknapping is an ancient skill where flint or other stone is shaped to create a finished product. George uses his tools to create a variety of things including arrowheads and rifle flint. He enjoys getting to perform his craft in front of an audience and explain the flintknapping process.
Jimmy Ray will have a historical weapons exhibit. He will be teaching about some of the weapons that were carried during the Corps of Discovery (also known as the Lewis and Clark expedition), and will be showcasing several replicas of the weapons that would have been available during that time.
There is no charge to meet and chat with George and Jimmy in the lobby, although there is an $8 fee per adult to go downstairs and view exhibits. Military members/veterans and their families get in for free, as well as America the Beautiful pass holders. US fourth graders are eligible for the Every Kid Outdoor pass, which gets their family in for free at both the LCIC and all national parks.
The LCIC will have many other community programs and events throughout the winter season. Snowshoes can be checked out for free on a first come first serve basis throughout the winter. In addition, admission will be free to everyone during the months of January and February. There will be several evening talks sponsored by the Ida Johnston Winter Speaker series happening throughout the winter. The center will also be hosting a Winter Film Festival during the month of February. For more information about any of these programs, please call the LCIC at (406) 727-8733.
