Brian’s Top Notch Café opened on October 3rd, 1989, and recently celebrated its 35th anniversary. Brian founded the café at the age of 24 and has since dedicated his life to this venture.
Despite encountering numerous adversities, Brian has remained steadfast in his commitment to the business. Brian has provided food free of charge for many people in the community, including recently providing a lunch to the workers involved in the search for Alicia Wood at the landfill.
The café operates from 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM, Tuesday through Saturday, and is closed on Sundays and Mondays. During the summertime, Brian manages two food trailers, which significantly contribute to his income, assisting financial stability during the winter months.
In addition to operating the restaurant and food trailers, Brian helps to feed the homeless. This began a few years ago during particularly cold weather when individuals sought assistance in finding food. As word spread, they began to feed approximately 15 individuals in need per day.
The financial burden of this has been substantial. To address this, Brian’s daughter established a Venmo fundraiser on Facebook, which has proven beneficial. Donations from the community have enabled them to sustain their efforts, while the Salvation Army has also contributed food supplies upon learning of their endeavor. The café prepares large quantities of affordable meals, such as stew, chili, and spaghetti, which are distributed free of charge. “I don’t know what’s going on in their life, but they’re just all having problems. They’re hungry and it’s not good,” Brian stated.
Although Brian and his small crew primarily feed the homeless during the winter months, they provide some food throughout the rest of the year.
Community members frequently offer financial contributions to support Brian’s mission of feeding the homeless. Last winter, he provided meals to between 100 and 200 homeless individuals. This year the mild weather has resulted in fewer people seeking assistance, yet Brian remains prepared to provide for as many individuals as necessary.
Three years ago, Brian battled cancer, and regrettably, the illness has returned. He now faces health challenges that limit his ability to stand for extended periods, which is essential in the food service industry. The prospect of relinquishing a passion that he holds dearly weighs heavily on him, but it may become necessary in the coming years due to these health concerns.
