Derek Mahlum started his career with the Wolf Point Police Department in 2004 and then moved on to the Havre Police Department where he achieved the rank of Sergeant.

He was hired by the Great Falls Police Department in April 2011 and retired on October 3rd after serving 20 years in Montana law enforcement.  He retires from his position as the Sergeant of the General Case Unit within the Investigative Services Bureau.

While with the GFPD Sergeant Mahlum was able to achieve certification through the International Association of Identification (IAI) as a Certified Crime Scene Analyst, one of only three in Montana. Also, Certified Subject Matter Expert in Call Detail Records and Geolocation Analysis, along with several other expertise in various crime scene investigative techniques.

“Sergeant Derek Mahlum is one of the most driven, professional, dedicated, and talented law enforcement officers I have ever met,” explained Matt Fleming. “There is a common aspiration in law enforcement to try to emulate the officer you would want your loved ones to encounter if they are ever the victim of a crime or having the worst day of their life. Sergeant Derek Mahlum has exceeded this measure as long as I have known him. I consider myself honored and privileged to have stood next to him on some of the most difficult and challenging days of my career. I will be forever grateful to have served with him and he will be missed here at the Great Falls Police Department. I have no doubt he will serve with the same distinction during his next chapter.”
