At approximately 2:00 am on October 5th, Great Falls Fire Rescue’s C-Platoon responded to a structure fire at 1701 20th Street South. The fire originated in a third-floor apartment within building C of the Pines Apartment complex.

Great Falls Fire Rescue promptly dispatched four apparatus and a battalion chief. Subsequently, a second alarm was initiated, prompting the recall of two full crews and a second battalion chief. Mutual aid was extended by the Montana Air National Guard fire department and the Malmstrom Air Force Base fire department.

Regrettably, the fire resulted in the fatality of the apartment’s occupant where it originated. Approximately twelve other residents were displaced, and support services were provided by the American Red Cross. The fire caused smoke and flame damage to the apartment, in addition to minor smoke and water damage to adjacent apartments within the building. The fire’s cause was attributed to smoking in the vicinity of portable oxygen.
