Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art (The Square) recently released a new exhibition catalogue for WITHIN: Louis Still Smoking & John Isaiah Pepion. This exhibition catalogue is a chronicle of their recent groundbreaking exhibition WITHIN: Louis Still Smoking & John Isaiah Pepion and serves as an importantcontribution to the history of art in Montana. While the catalogue functions as a record of the artists’ installation, it is also complete in itself and features critically-written essays and photographic contributions that accompany as well as expand upon the visual conversation.
“We are grateful to our supporters and anonymous donors, who provide the Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art the opportunity to support us in the creation of exhibition catalogues,” said Nicole Maria Evans, Curator of Exhibitions and Collections. “Exhibition catalogues published by Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art allow communities to connect, minds to grow, and education in the arts to flourish”
WITHIN: Louis Still Smoking & John Isaiah Pepion was an artist-led and curated two-week residency and installation-based exhibition featuring large-scale murals, sculptures, paintings, and ledger art by two celebrated Native American artists representing the Blackfeet Nation in Browning, Montana. The exhibition was featured by and originated at Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art, Great Falls, Montana from October 20, 2023, through March 17, 2024. The catalogue publication includes a forward by Sarah Justice, Executive Director of Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art; a Curator’s in-depth essay to WITHIN by Nicole Maria Evans, Curator of Exhibitions and Collections at Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art; the artist’s philosophy statement and expanded writings on individual works by Louis Still Smoking and John Isaiah Pepion; a photo essay by photographer Jacob Cowgill; and contributing essays by Indigenous scholars Jennifer Woodcock-Medicine Horse, Ph.D., and artist Sean Chandler, Ed.D. Catalogue design was contributed by Eric Heidle. The publication includes full color images of the exhibition and features images of the individual works.
Still Smoking and Pepion stated, “We, Louis Still Smoking and John Isaiah Pepion, are Indigenous artists that have a history of working together on murals and exhibits that display our artistic talents and educate people about our art using personal content, styles, and mediums. We used the entire exhibition space at Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art to incorporate a mixed installation of mural works that visually create a unique experience for the viewer…This project gives authenticity to our contemporary artwork and gives a voice to us as Native artists and Native scholars of this region today.”
