Several events are coming up this month at First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park near Ulm, including the kick-off for the park’s popular Junior Ranger program.
Snake Hike
At noon on Saturday, June 8, snake expert Dan Waitt will lead a program on how to hike safely in areas where rattlesnakes are present. The park is home to multiple species of snakes including rattlesnakes, and participants will learn about how to identify their preferred habitat and how to hike safely and stay safe on the trails. Enrollment for this free hike is limited to 20 participants, and advanced registration is required.
Bear Aware
At 9 a.m. on Monday, June 10, FWP staff will hold a program on bears and how to be bear aware and recreate safely in bear country. The free program will be held at the park’s visitor center and no registration is required.
Junior Rangers
First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park’s popular Junior Ranger Program will offer nine programs this summer geared towards children from 6 to 12 years old, although all ages are welcome. Parents or guardians must accompany their children during the class.
Registration is currently open for the programs, which will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursdays throughout the summer, except on July 4 when no program will be offered. To sign up for June programs, call the park at 406-866-2217 with names and ages of participants. Registration for July programs will be taken beginning the last week of June.
June programs include:
- June 13 – Run, Jump, Kick and Scream: Traditional native games for children
- June 20 – Yucca Soap: Rub a dub dub, yucca in the tub. Learn to make soap from yucca root
- June 27 – All About Snakes, presented by Montana Reptile Rescue
