Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art (The Square) will host a one-day workshop on Saturday, February 10th, 2024 from 12pm to 3pm on Intermediate and Advanced Ceramic Techniques. Great Falls-based potter Don Hanson will lead the workshop as part of The Square’s quarterly art education programming.

The workshop will include demonstrations of throwing techniques, textures, forms both altered and thrown, with much opportunity for questions and answers. Participants will throw pots guided by Don Hanson with assistance on altered forms.

Don Hanson was born in Seattle, Washington in 1943, and grew up in Great Falls, Montana where he still calls home today. Don’s art studies began at Montana State University-Billings, where he majored in art education and graduated with a BS degree with emphasis in sculpture and ceramic design.

Today, Hanson specializes in burial urns for funeral homes, corporate gifts, functional stoneware, dinnerware sets, fine porcelain, and works directly with interior designers and architects as well as commission projects for individuals.

“I have made my living making functional stoneware and decorative porcelain pieces. I try to formulate colorful glazes as I am a student of the days when everyone used earthtone glazes. I have been fortunate to ship my work literally all over the world. I have become friends with countless people in the 53 years of working in my craft,” said Hanson.

Information about this workshop and registration details can be found on The Square’s class portal website at the-square.corsizio.com. For more information, prospective students can reach out to Ellie Weber, Director of Education, at ellie@the-square.org.
