This issue’s artists are Christine McKay and David Sanford, a couple from Cascade.
David is from Utah and Christine was raised north of Seattle. The two of them have been together since 1984 and moved to Montana in 1988.
Christine started drawing at around age three. She enjoyed watercolor, and drawing, and always loved working with charcoal. “My favorite medium is probably charcoal, but I haven’t done that for some time,” explained Christine.
In 1988, Christine went to the University of Montana as a non-traditional student and received her degree in fine arts. She has taken several ceramics and painting courses and found that she really enjoyed ceramics.
Christine primarily uses a lush porcelain clay that she carves into. She has made some quite large ceramic sculptures, some of which have been two to four feet tall. Since they are larger than her kiln, she makes them into two parts, cutting “key” sections into them where she uses sterling silver pins to key the sections together.
Christine has created several types of art including paintings, drawings, ceramics, and jewelry, but mostly enjoys the smaller artwork lately.
Most of the time she enjoys working with her husband David making wax carvings for jewelry. They use the Lost Wax process as was used in ancient times.

David always liked working with jewelry since he was a teenager working with his aunt. He has worked with different jewelers in Missoula and Great Falls.
They enjoy working together creating jewelry and helping each other with different ideas. “I kind of fell into it, but it gives me a good way to de-stress and do the things I like to do,” explained David.
