Abigail McDaniel moved from Alabama to Montana about two years ago, when her husband transferred with the military.

She started Alcove Baking company about a year ago under the Montana Freedom Food Law. As a stay-at-home mom, this law makes it easier to run her business from home.

Alcove Baking makes and sells breads, pies, pastries, and cookies. “We’re going to start offering sourdough starter gift boxes and get into more exposure in that realm as well,” explained Abigail. “We’ve talked to a couple of different places about possibly doing either sourdough or baking classes.”

Abigail was a hair stylist in Alabama, but is enjoying her new baking business. “Hair was a lot trickier,” she explained, “because you have to transfer your license every time you move. Whereas baking, you just kind of bring it with you.”

Abigail is looking forward to growing her business, “I would like to get into selling the sourdough starter gift boxes to different gift shops so that people can experience sourdough in the way that we provide it when someone buys bread,” she explained. “They’re very gift-oriented and how they’re wrapped, how you’ll unbox them, but then you’ll be able to learn that skill as well for yourself.”
