This summer and fall, there’s an opportunity to learn how to make outings with your dog safer and more enjoyable for everyone. Your dog can become a B.A.R.K. Ranger at Lone Pine State Park.
Lone Pine State Park is offering B.A.R.K. Ranger Hikes on select Saturdays throughout the summer and fall. The next hike is scheduled for Saturday, July 25th, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., with additional dates planned later in the season. During the guided hike, participants and their dogs will explore the park while learning practical tips for recreating responsibly with pets.
“Dogs are a major influence on both the environment and other park goers,” said Jocelyn Schlachta, program specialist at Lone Pine State Park. “Learning how to minimize potentially negative impacts through the B.A.R.K. Ranger program allows park-goers and their dogs to safely recreate outside while coexisting with local flora and fauna. It’s a win-win.”
The B.A.R.K. Ranger program, originally developed by the National Park Service, encourages responsible pet ownership on public lands. Similar to the popular Junior Ranger Program, B.A.R.K. teaches visitors how to be good stewards of parks and trails while enjoying them with their dogs. The acronym B.A.R.K. reminds pet owners to: Bag your pet’s waste, Always keep your pet on a leash, Respect wildlife, and Know where you can go. By following these simple steps, dog owners help protect wildlife, preserve natural resources, and ensure that trails remain safe and enjoyable for everyone.
Participants who complete the program will receive an official Lone Pine State Park dog tag and can enter a photo contest for a chance to have their pet featured on Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ social media as an ambassador for responsible outdoor recreation.
