The Cochrane Dam crossing will take place on June 6th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in celebration of National Trails Day.

Although the dam is typically closed to public access, NorthWestern Energy and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks have come together to offer this special opportunity for hikers and bikers to explore the trails along both sides of the Missouri River.

This event grants a unique chance for trail users to create a loop and traverse both sides of the river in a single trip, instead of the usual out-and-back route on one side.

To reach Cochrane Dam, you can use the River’s Edge Trail in Great Falls, which connects the north shore to the south shore. Once you arrive at the dam, visitors may hike or walk their bikes across.

Participants should be prepared for at least a five-mile strenuous hike or ride. Proper footwear, sunscreen, and plenty of drinking water for both participants and pets are essential, as there is no access to water along the route. Please note that there is little to no shade on the trail, and this area is known for having rattlesnakes.

It is advisable to arrange for a shuttle service or park a vehicle at your endpoint, as park staff will not provide shuttle services. Bikes must be walked across the dam, and pets should be on a leash or under voice control at all times on the trail.

Trail users should expect heavier-than-normal traffic during this event. Bicyclists should control their speed, yield to all others, stay to the right except when passing, and use a bell or call out before overtaking someone. Some areas of the trail are rated as moderately difficult, so riders should plan accordingly.

For more information or to get trail recommendations, please contact the Giant Springs ranger station at 406-727-1212, or refer to the River’s Edge Trail Map.
