There are multiple in-person Hunter Education courses currently open for registration and beginning soon in north-central Montana. These free courses are taught by skilled volunteer instructors and offer hands-on learning experiences, mentoring opportunities and the ability for students to ask questions of experienced hunters. During in-person courses, students learn how to handle firearms safely, basic survival skills, hunting ethics, wildlife management, game identification, landowner-hunter relations, and Montana hunting laws and regulations.
Registration is currently open for these in-person courses and starting dates:
- March 4 – Choteau
- March 10 – Lewistown
- March 11 – Conrad
- March 11 – Great Falls
- March 17 – Belt
- March 18 – Fairfield
To register for these or other courses, visit: fwp.mt.gov/hunt/education. This webpage is updated as more classes are scheduled around the state.
Montana law requires anyone born after Jan. 1, 1985, to complete a Hunter Education class or qualify as an apprentice hunter before purchasing a Montana hunting license. People are strongly encouraged to register for classes as soon as possible, as offerings are limited by volunteer instructor capacity, and although some classes may be offered again next fall, the number of classes and seats is generally less than during the spring months.
In-person courses are led by volunteer instructors who are passionate about preserving Montana’s hunting tradition, teaching firearm safety, ethics, and other outdoor skills. Students must be at least 10 years old to participate in hunter education.
